A recent study revealed that 63% of engineering employers believe graduates aren’t ready for the workplace (Institute of Engineering and Technology, 2023). We're determined to change that statistic. Your degree should prepare you to step confidently into a real-world engineering career, which is why everything we do is designed to make you industry ready from day one.
Courses shaped by industry
Our engineering courses are developed in collaboration with industry professionals to ensure the content is current, relevant and aligned with the skills employers are looking for. From emerging technologies to sector-specific tools and practices, you'll gain knowledge that’s directly applicable to today’s engineering roles. These partnerships ensure that you're learning what really matters, and not just in theory, but in practice too.
Live briefs
Throughout the course you’ll take on live briefs, many set by industry, giving you the chance to work on real challenges that businesses face. These projects push you to apply your learning to real scenarios, solve practical problems and understand the expectations of industry professionals. You’ll build confidence, develop a professional mindset and begin building a portfolio of experience while you study. Your final projects, which span the entire final academic year, will also often be set by employers - allowing you to bring together all the knowledge and skills that you have acquired across your degree.
Teamwork
Modern engineering is rarely a solo venture. That’s why group projects are central to our course structure. From day one, you’ll work collaboratively with peers, mirroring the teamwork found in the workplace. Whether it’s managing deadlines, distributing tasks or solving complex problems together, you’ll develop critical soft skills that employers consistently look for; communication, leadership and collaboration.
Additional to your studies, there are additional opportunities to collaborate with your peers on initiatives such as Formula Student and Repair Lab.

Placements
Experience makes all the difference in landing your first engineering job. On your engineering course you will have the option to take a professional placement block or even an entire professional placement year. These placements provide invaluable insights into how engineering works in practice, and will allow you to make connections with employers that can open doors after graduation.
Showcasing talent at Innovation Fest
Each year, we host Innovation Fest, a flagship event where students showcase their engineering projects to an audience of industry professionals. It’s also a chance to network, gain feedback and impress potential employers. For many students, Innovation Fest has been the launchpad into internships, job offers or collaborative opportunities.
At BCU, we immerse you in engineering with industry-driven content, hands-on experience, teamwork, placements and professional showcases. We aim to build graduates who don’t just meet employer expectations, but exceed them.
