Vanguard
Funded by Office for Students
Vanguard is a government-funded project to support the development of the skilled workforce needed to support the UK’s future defence and security capabilities.
Funding from the Office for Students, in partnership with the Ministry of Defence and the Department for Education, will support the growth of student places in engineering and computing courses to create opportunities for more students to develop the advanced technical skills needed by the UK's defence sector. It aims to address skills shortages in areas including cyber security, advanced manufacturing, robotics, autonomous technologies and engineering.
Facilities
The Vanguard project will include investment in specialist infrastructure and equipment, ensuring our students have access to cutting-edge facilities and industry-relevant learning environments that support both their studies and future employment prospects. Facilities will include:
Cyber Range Laboratory
Mechatronics and Autonomous Systems Lab
Electrical Machines, Drives and Power Electronics Lab
Hackathon
We invited applicants to our Computing and Engineering courses to attend a speical Hackathon that explored some of the skills we are supporting students to develop through the Vanguard project.
"A Hackathon is a fast-paced challenge, usually over the course of a day. This year’s challenge focused on cyber and AI to coincide with the Vanguard project. Prospective students gain a lot from the Hackathon as not only are they are fun, but you get to meet future course mates and form your first impression on what to expect from the course. It goes to show if you can solve a problem in 4 hours, just wait and see what you can learn in 3 years!"
