Stonewall Project Extended

In 2019 Birmingham City University launched the ‘Going for Stonewall’ Project with the aim of developing and embedding best practice in LGBT+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans) inclusion for staff and students.

Over the past two years the project has worked in close partnership with the Staff LGBT+ Network, BCUSU, the LGBTQ+ Society and other colleagues to deliver a range of initiatives.

These include policy reviews, panel events and talks, Birmingham Pride, an annual LGBTQ Student Welcome, developing information resources and launching the LGBT+ Allies Scheme, which has provided facilitated training to more than 230 BCU and BCUSU staff. At least 3000 rainbow lanyards have also been distributed to staff and students, as part of making campus a proactively welcoming place.

The University made its first submission to the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index in October 2021, following a pause on submissions in 2020 due to the pandemic, and should receive the outcome in February 2022. Originally due to conclude in December 2021, the Stonewall Project has been extended by a year to continue work on LGBT+ inclusion at BCU and develop an action plan in response to the Stonewall Index outcome. Upcoming work includes further development of the LGBT+ Allies Scheme and inclusive curriculum developments following surveys conducted last year.

You can find out more information and updates on the Stonewall Project webpage.

LGBTQ Inclusion Surveys - Research Update

Over 450 students and staff submitted responses to the LGBTQ inclusion surveys conducted by the project over May and June 2021. Participants were informed that responses would be kept until the end of the project in December 2021, however with the extension to the project we would like to inform anyone who took part that their anonymous responses will now be kept until December 2022, in order to enable more meaningful analysis of the results. Any information which identifies specific individuals will not be kept beyond December 2021.

This work will inform the development of staff training, resources and inclusive curriculum initiatives.
