Dr von Berg is an interdisciplinary scholar in human rights education and human rights law. His research and practice focuses on two areas: how the right to effective participation is governed and can be re-imagined in international human rights law; and, how civic participation can be shaped by transformative pedagogies for human rights at university.

Dr von Berg’s work contributes to understanding how transformative human rights education can be applied in higher education. He has developed research methodologies for transformative learning by combining experiential learning with participatory theatre. He has also introduced the concept of liminality from sociology to human rights education to re-imagine spaces for transformative learning. He has applied these ideas to his teaching to create more inclusive courses and modules as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA); and, in an enterprise non-profit venture, he established, called The Bridge. He has an international profile working with scholars from 19 universities worldwide in the Global Transformative Education Network (GTEN). GTEN is a voluntary association that he helped create and coordinate to bring together scholars to advance cutting edge research in human rights, citizenship and social justice education.

Dr von Berg is Academic Lead for Partnerships and Course Lead for the LLM International Law.
