Dr. Neeranjan Chitare

Dr Neeranjan Chitare is a Lecturer in Cybersecurity at Birmingham City University, an Advance HE Fellow (FHEA) and a SPRITE+ Expert Fellow. With over 15 years of academic, teaching, and research experience across India and the UK, Dr Neeranjan has established a strong track record in education, impactful research, research funding, and international collaboration. His research focuses on human-centred cybersecurity, with particular interests in sophisticated phishing attacks, AI-enabled phishing, usable security, cyber resilience, and the interaction between people and security technologies. He completed his PhD at Northumbria University, where he investigated how employees and security practitioners detect and respond to sophisticated lateral phishing attacks.

He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate modules in cybersecurity, digital forensics, software security, cryptography, and cyber operations, and supervises honours and master's research projects. His teaching is underpinned by research, industry engagement, and international collaboration, enabling students to develop both technical expertise and an understanding of the human factors that influence cybersecurity.

Dr Chitare has published in leading cybersecurity and human-computer interaction venues and actively collaborates with academic and industry partners on research addressing emerging cyber threats. His research has been recognised through several awards, including the RISCS Doctoral Prize (2026) for outstanding National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC)-aligned research and the Best Paper Award at the European Symposium on Usable Security (EuroUSEC 2025). He is winner of ‘Academic Impact Award’, Northumbria University (2024). He was also nominated for the Inspirational Teacher of the Year Award at the I AM BCU Awards (2025). Alongside his teaching and research, he serves as a reviewer for leading international Q1 journals and conferences and contributes to research initiatives.
