SuperStudio
Alongside your studies, we offer a wide range of activities as part of something called SuperStudio.
Held every Wednesday, exclusively to Architecture and Design students, SuperStudio is a space that gives you the opportunity to learn or work on specific skills, hear from key speakers across all disciplines and meet visiting companies.
We’ve run everything from mindfulness, yoga and meditation sessions for the more stressful times of the year. There's a real buzz around the activities in offer, with students making the most of these events to progress their skills or just learn something new for fun!
Guest Speakers
SuperStudio is proud to welcome a number of high profile, award-winning architects and designers to speak on their chosen disciplines.
Talks have ranged from complex and ambitious regeneration projects shaping Birmingham, to bridge and infrastructure design. Students have also change the chance to hear from returning alumni, currently based in Hong Kong, as well as hearing the story of the design and construction of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Each talk gives students the opportunity to learn from some of the leading architects from across the world.

Workshops
With the wealth of knowledge within the School, there’s plenty of opportunities for staff to work with students on a range of different workshops.
Recently, Birmingham School of Architecture and Design lecturer and prize winning illustrator Ana Rute Costa held an inhabited sketching session with architecture illustrator Timothy Richardson. Students had chance to bring their sketchpad and hone their drawing skills to add a new dimension to their work.
The workshops allow students to further progress their skills, with previous sessions including industrial ceramic design using transferable techniques and skills in plaster modelling and gaining an understanding of mould-making. Students heard from technical tutors on elements such as structural and Passivhaus design; environmental design; detailed design and materials.
Students also have the chance to improve their standard skills, with Photoshop, InDesign, digital rendering and topographic modelling.
New workshops are planned to give students more of an insight into the future of architecture and design, with films discussing how drones will change cities and getting deeper into virtual and augmented reality.
Super Mentor
The Super Mentor plays an important part of the Super Studio culture. Employed by the School, the mentors provide support to advice fellow students on how to test and improve their skills in one of three core areas:
- Research and writing
- Personal and presentation
- Digital and drawing
The roles give current students the great opportunity to develop their own communication, technical and organisation skills, as well as earning money whilst helping their fellow students.
Wellness
Not only does Super Studio offer you the opportunity to learn new skills and hear from industry experts, but it’s also designed to make sure you’re supported in the body as well as the mind.
Our wellness sessions have included everything from:
- Meditation
- Seeing unseeing – including sketching with pens, pastels and paints
- Yoga
