Andrew Hilton ARB is a BCU alumnus (1993–2005), architect, educator and researcher with over 30 years’ international experience across architecture, interiors, landscape and urban regeneration. He founded international award-winning practices Choral Studio Ltd (UK) and Urban Synthesis (China), integrating research, community participation, living heritage, spatial agency, social justice and stakeholder engagement into design and construction.
His professional work spans interior and architectural projects, urban regeneration and planning strategies, and conceptual masterplans across Northern Europe, the Middle East and, most extensively, China.
At the Department of Architecture and the Built Environment, Andy has taught across spatial disciplines at undergraduate and postgraduate levels for more than two decades. Before becoming Course Leader for BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design, he held Visiting Lecturer roles, was Deputy Course Leader and an MArch Architecture unit leader. His teaching was recognised with BCU’s 2012 Excellence in Teaching Extra Mile Award, as Overall Winner, and inclusion in the School’s centenary publication, Sphere of Influence, recognising its most influential staff and alumni.
Andrew has led design, research and field teams in diverse contexts worldwide, including remote rural and peri-urban environments. Since 2019, he has been a practice organiser for UCL’s Bartlett Development Planning Unit SummerLab programme, delivering live-design workshops across China for hundreds of participants.
He is also a Board Trustee of ArchDaily 2025 Practice of the Year CatalyticAction, which uses design to empower communities in vulnerable contexts, and a design advisory panel member for Qujing, Yunnan, China.
His research-led pedagogy centres on spatial agency, collaboration, participation and the transdisciplinary potential of Interior Architecture to generate creativity, transformation and positive change.
Practice awards include the 2006 IFAI International Achievement Award for Air Inflated Structures – Outstanding Achievement Award, Heathrow Central Bus and Coach Station; and the 2026 IABP Award for Excellence in Urban Regeneration, Ximen Street Regeneration Project.
