Ali Mostafavi is a Lecturer in Civil Engineering at Birmingham City University, with more than a decade of professional and academic experience spanning transportation planning, traffic engineering, urban mobility and civil engineering education.

Before moving into a full-time academic role, Ali worked across a range of transport planning and engineering projects in the UK and the MENA region, progressing through technical, consultancy and senior advisory roles. This experience has shaped his practice-focused approach to higher education and his interest in connecting engineering theory with the challenges encountered in real-world projects.

Ali joined Birmingham City University as a Visiting Lecturer in 2024 and became a full-time Lecturer in Civil Engineering in 2026. His academic work includes teaching, student supervision, curriculum development and applied research. He is particularly interested in helping students develop the analytical, technical and professional skills needed to approach engineering problems with confidence and sound judgement.

Alongside his teaching, Ali is undertaking doctoral research at Birmingham City University in transportation and human factors, with a particular interest in driver interaction with conditionally automated vehicles. His wider interests bring together transport engineering, digital modelling, road safety, sustainable mobility and data-driven approaches to engineering and planning.
