Dr Riccardo D’Orsi is a Lecturer in Economics at Birmingham City University Business School. Riccardo joined Birmingham City University after completing his PhD in Economics at Leeds University Business School (LUBS), where he focused on unpacking how cyclical swings in global financial markets affect domestic financial instability and contribute to uneven regional development.

His research lies at the intersection of global macroeconomics, international political economy, and development finance. Riccardo is interested in understanding money and the interaction between finance and the real economy in the international context. Particularly, his work has mainly focused on the relationship between cross-border capital flows, financial cycles, macro-financial stability, and economic development. He is currently co-authoring a book on international monetary and financial subordination commissioned by Cambridge University Press. Riccardo has collaborated with research institutes and think tanks such as the Global Development Policy Center at Boston University and the Institute For Economic Justice, advising on international debt and sustainable development.

In his teaching, Riccardo advances a pluralist and critical pedagogy that situates economics within its philosophical, political, and historical breadth, aiming to cultivate individuals capable of navigating complexity by engaging with diverse analytical perspectives and applying competing paradigms to contemporary real-world challenges.
