Five new things to do in Birmingham in 2018

Whether or not you’re committing to new resolutions this year, Birmingham has lots of new attractions and events to take your mind off giving up chocolate.

1) See Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery like you’ve never seen it before

When: 19 January

Where: Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery

How much: £12 per ticket

It’s no secret that Birmingham’s got a great Museum and Art Gallery, with relics from the Staffordshire Hoard and intriguing History of Birmingham exhibits, it’s a great day out that you’ve probably done already.

But now you can experience a real night at the museum and go on a torchlit tour. Not only is it atmospheric (and a little spooky) the event also features a full guided tour of the museum so you’ll come away learning a lot more than you would on your own.

2) Go full 80s with a Stranger Things themed party

When: 17 February

Where: Mama Roux’s, Digbeth

How much: Free entry

A portal to the Upside Down is opening in Madam Roux’s of Digbeth and it’s being filled with retro games. Live artists will be performing at the retro gaming night on 17 February, recreating Stranger Things scenes and characters on canvas. If you like Stranger Things, games and street food you need to keep this night free in your diary.

3) Try one of the amazing new restaurants

A Cuban bar, A Head of Steam and a new location to the magical Wilderness restaurant are among the amazing new food and drink venues heading to Birmingham this year, and that's just the ones we know about now! How about a New Year's resolution to try a new restaurant every month? That's something we can get behind.

Kong's Gaming Bar is also rumored to be joining the Birmingham's repertoire this year, featuring classic arcade games, table foosball and ping pong along with a great selection of drinks and, judging by existing venues, a pop-up kitchen.

4) Dine with Dippy

When: 26 May - 9 September

Where: Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery

How much: Free entry

You don't have to go all the way to London to see Dippy the Diplodocus, long time resident of the Natural History Museum, because he's visiting us in Birmingham from May to September 18. He'll be standing proud in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery's Edwardian Tea Rooms, so you can actually dine with Dippy - lucky he's a vegetarian.

5) Festival and other favourites

If there's one thing Birmingham loves it's a festival, and while the below aren't necessarily new to the city in 2018, if they're new to you then it's time to take down some dates!

Flatpack Film Festival

When: Spring 2018

Where: Everywhere in Birmingham (Nearly)!

How much: Varies between events and venues

Flatpack is a festival which takes over venues across Birmingham every spring. It draws people from far and wide with a mixture of films, performances, contraptions and surprises. If you're walking through Birmingham during the festival, it's hard to miss Flatpack.

Digbeth Dining Club

When: Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday

Where: Lower Trinity St, Birmingham

How much: Free entry (except for the last Friday of every month)

A Birmingham favourite, Digbeth Dining Club is a weekly food festival featuring some of the best street food that your money can buy! You might even be able to sample culinary delights from British Street Food award winners Baked In Brick!

Swingamajig Festival
