Law student Shadia Dobson spent a placement year in the USA as part of the American Legal Practice Placement at BCU.
Taking part in the American Legal Practice (ALP) programme and working with the Maricopa County Public Defender’s Office has been a brilliant opportunity. It’s given me real-world insight into the US justice system, sharpened my advocacy skills, and opened my eyes to the importance of access to justice.
Arizona might be known for its desert landscapes, but Tempe is full of surprises. With palm-lined streets, vibrant flowers in bloom, and scenic spots like Tempe Town Lake, it’s a city that blends natural beauty with a laid-back, youthful vibe. Whether you're grabbing a smoothie under the sun or strolling through the Desert Botanical Garden, Tempe proves that the Southwest isn’t just sand and cacti—it’s a colorful, welcoming place to call home during your placement.
Justice under the sun: Arizona public defender experience
Stepping into the courtroom at the Maricopa County Superior Court was both humbling and electrifying. As part of the Public Defender’s Office, I observed firsthand the tireless advocacy for those who couldn’t afford representation. From prepping case files to shadowing attorneys during arraignments and hearings, I witnessed the delicate balance between law and humanity. Each day brought new challenges, but also a deeper understanding of justice in action—especially in a system where every voice deserves to be heard, even under the blazing Arizona sun.
