Why study a Master's degree?

You’ve already completed your undergraduate degree, so what more can you get from further study? We’ve got five reasons why a master’s degree can benefit you and your future career.

1. Boost employability

Studying at Master’s level gives you the chance to build on your skills and gain more work experience, putting you in the perfect position to enter the graduate jobs market. In 2022, 78.3% of graduates with a postgraduate degree were in high-skilled employment, compared to just 66.3% of graduates who had only completed an undergraduate degree. (Graduate Labour Market Statistics 2022).

Our postgraduate degrees are built to help you achieve your career goals and many are professionally accredited, meaning you can be prepared for the world of work once you finish your master’s degree.

Plus, we’ve invested over £400 million in industry-standard, state-of-the-art facilities to ensure you have the best possible environment for practice-based learning.

2. Build Connections

Studying at postgraduate level will give you an opportunity to develop professional networks with industries in Birmingham and the rest of the UK.

With more of a focus on employability and entering the working world, postgraduate courses often offer the chance for you to attend conferences and talks from people in industry. Plus, you may have the opportunity to work with businesses through live briefs, work placements or volunteering.

Our STEAMhouse business innovation centre provides students with access to industry links, placement opportunities and talks from business experts.

3. Earn more

Someone with a Master's degree or PhD earns £5,000 more per year, or £200,000 over a 40-year working life, than someone with just a degree (Graduate Labour Market Statistics 2023, Department for Education).

4. Explore your passion

Postgraduate study allows you to explore your chosen subject in-depth, with more freedom and independence than you had during your undergraduate degree.

Our contemporary, flexible courses with practice-based learning and international opportunities will allow you to develop your knowledge and become an expert in your field.

5. Learn from the best

Our teaching staff come from and maintain their links with industry and will be there every step of the way to help you establish your own career. Our staff are experts in their subject and have specialisms and knowledge unique to BCU.

Plus, our staff will be researching alongside you. 93% of our research was recognised internationally for originality, significance and rigour, of which 19% was judged world-leading (REF 2021).
