Birmingham City University (BCU) has been recognised as one of the UK’s leading institutions for postgraduate student experience, outperforming 90% of other universities in the latest Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES).

Conducted annually by Advance HE, PTES gathers feedback from thousands of postgraduate students, who rate their experiences in key areas such as teaching quality, learning support, organisation, and overall satisfaction.

Key highlights from PTES 2025:

• Top 10 performance in 5 out of 10 key themes, including:

  • Teaching
  • Assessment (Top 5 nationally)
  • Support
  • Skills Development
  • On-Campus Resources

• Despite a lower sector-wide performance in the ‘Community’ theme, BCU still ranked within the top 10% of institutions.

BCU also performed strongly across several subject areas for overall satisfaction:

• Top 3 position for Architecture, Building and Planning (out of 31)

• Top 10 positions in:

  • Computing (out of 67)
  • Design, and Creative and Performing Arts (out of 36)
  • Psychology (out of 46)
  • Subjects Allied to Medicine (out of 65)

Professor David Mba, Vice-Chancellor at BCU, said: "This achievement is a testament to the dedication of our staff and the strength of our learning community.

"We are proud that our postgraduate students feel empowered, valued, and well-supported throughout their academic journey at BCU.

"We are also confident that, by providing our community with a rewarding student experience, they will be well prepared to excel wherever their ambition takes them.”
