Ten tips for self-care

At stressful times, such as the run up to exams and assessments, it's important to also take time to look after your wellbeing. This doesn’t need to be costly; our Mental Health and Wellbeing Team has put together some ideas below for inspiration.

1. Get outdoors

Whether it’s intense exercise or a relaxing walk, getting outside and being active releases feel good endorphins, and on a nice sunny day you can top up on your vitamin D too.

2. Take a bath

Sit back in the bath or take a long shower, and enjoy the opportunity to be disconnected from the world for a short while.

3. Put on your favourite music or a podcast

Having a dance to music can be a great way to release tensions and endorphins.

4. Have a social media detox day

Put your phone in a drawer for a day and distract yourself with other things.

5. Meditate

BCU students can access Headspace for free, which has some great meditations and short courses. Sign up for free with your BCU email address here.

6. Cook or bake

Try your favourite recipe or whisk up something new in the kitchen. All the better when you can share it around too!

7. Play games

Whether board games or online, games are a great way to switch off from the world.

8. Call someone

Whether someone close or someone you haven’t spoken to in a while, take a moment to connect with others.

9. Try a hobby or something new

Take time to do something you enjoy, or try a new skill. Not sure where to start? Birmingham City University Students' Union has a bunch of societies to choose from!

10. Watch a comfort film

Head to the cinema, or grab some snacks and get cosy on the sofa!

Reach out if you need support

Remember, if you’re struggling at the moment, there’s lots of help available from the University and beyond.
