Life Skills Summer School

Our award-winning Summer School is designed to help new autistic / neurodiverse students and those with social anxiety to explore some of the key skills they may need to live independently whilst at university and when sharing accommodation with other students. Our aim is to alleviate some of the anxieties you might have about starting university and help you settle in as easily as possible.

The event is usually held in early September over three days and two nights, which means you also have the chance to try out staying in university accommodation.

During the event, you will be offered workshops, information and opportunities to socialise with other new students.

The topics we usually aim to cover include:

  • What is mentoring support and study skills support?
  • Meal planning and budgeting
  • Friendships and relationships
  • Problem-solving
  • Tips for staying safe at university
  • What the BCU Students' Union has to offer
  • Getting to know the campus, accommodation and the city
  • Information about the Disability Support Team and how we can help, plus what other support is on offer at the University
  • Information on self-help tools

All the students who have attended previous Summer Schools said they would recommend it to future students, and many felt it helped them to feel more relaxed about starting university.
