MFA Acting

Rudra’s postgraduate journey came less conventionally than others; after trying to pursue improv comedy for years in India, he had decided that he wanted classical training in the UK to fulfil his acting dreams. Rudra found fulfilment in the multicultural atmosphere and academic support at BCU, where he honed his skills and overcame language barriers. His aspirations now extend to inspiring others from underrepresented communities while aiming for success in the UK's theatre, TV, and film industry, emphasising the transformative journey offered by BCU's MFA Acting program.

"Deciding to pursue a postgraduate course stemmed from the realisation that formal training was essential to fulfilling my dream of becoming a well-rounded actor. Despite years of pursuing improv comedy as a hobby, it wasn't until I turned 33 in 2021 that I decided to transition into acting. Throughout the year, I dabbled in auditions for commercials and web series, landing a lead role in a commercial aired during the Indian Premier League. However, I lacked formal training and substantial theatre/screen experience, so I recognised that I needed classical training, which led me to apply to drama schools.

Transitioning into postgraduate studies at BCU introduced me to a multicultural atmosphere which was really helpful to my growth. The MFA Acting program spent a lot of time working with international students on the course, which was useful in providing me with a structured learning environment. I made good use of the rehearsal studios and the well-equipped library at BCU’s city centre campus in the Curzon building.

The academic support I was given, particularly in overcoming challenges as a non-native English-speaking actor, was invaluable. My voice and speech classes soon became a favourite of mine; they offered technical skill-based approaches, which really helped to boost my confidence in delivering English texts and even performing Shakespearean works. The course has a real emphasis on processes and reflection, which I feel gave me crucial opportunities to hone in on my skills and boost my career prospects.

Looking ahead, my aspirations extend beyond personal success to inspiring and enabling aspiring performers from underrepresented communities. By showcasing my abilities across media platforms, I aim to carve a niche while drawing inspiration from trailblazing actors of colour.

My primary goal after graduation is to secure employment within the UK theatre, TV, and film industry. I think the course has provided me with foundational pillars for my acting journey by teaching me a deep understanding of acting as a craft and its professional applications.

For those considering postgraduate study, I’d recommend taking the time to weigh up your options first and looking at the wider picture of your career so you can make an informed decision. As for prospective students looking into the MFA Acting program, I’d say get ready to embrace the challenges and enjoy the process! The course demands a lot of dedication but also offers a transformative journey toward self-discovery and professional growth.

In the tapestry of my experience, I AM BCU embodies a transformational journey grounded in resilience, determination, and a commitment to excellence."
