Gitika Gidwani

English and Creative Writing – BA (Hons)

Gitika knew BCU was the university for her, as it was clear she would be supported in her move from India. Thanks to her tutors, BCU’s support services and the inclusive community at BCU, she’s settled into her new life.

“I’ve always wanted to explore different aspects of writing and excel as a writer; I write poetry in my own time, but I wanted to study at university to improve my skills and explore other writing styles. Applying for English and Creative Writing, I had a lot of universities to choose from, I knew I wanted to leave India, so I applied for universities in the UK and Canada, but BCU was always my first choice.

I was able to do lots of research online and talk to alumni who had studied English. They gave me the impression that BCU had a community feel, with lots of societies to get involved with. Plus, the Creative Writing modules at BCU fascinate me and I knew there would be lots of opportunities to think outside of the box.

I had to start my studies a little later than everyone else. I thought I’d feel out of place, but I soon started making friends. I live in The Heights accommodation and the communal area is great for getting to know people, there’s a really good atmosphere. Plus, I attended the events organised by the BCU Indian society on Navratri and Diwali and I thoroughly enjoyed the event and meeting new people. It’s motivated me to get involved more and I am looking forward to joining Dance, Kickboxing and Media societies. The diversity and cultural events at BCU really are one of a kind.

My course tutors and student support have also helped me get used to the UK and BCU. Moving to a new country was a bit of a shock to the system, but my tutors helped me understand the UK education system, how to best manage my workload and they even offered me advice about living alone. I’m grateful to them for being so cooperative and making BCU feel like home.

There are always lots of employability events at the university, they’ve helped me develop my skills and understand what it’s like to work in the UK, so I’m more aware of the job market I’ll be graduating into. The employability activities have helped me feel more confident, personally and professionally. I realised the importance of networking and putting myself out there.

I’ve really settled into life at BCU, I love grabbing a coffee and studying independently or with my friends in the study areas. They are great to focus on work and I feel really productive in these spaces. I also like going to the library, the library staff are helpful and encouraging. It’s nice feeling like everyone at BCU wants you to do well.

To me, ‘I am BCU’ means being a part of a community and living my best life.”
