Niamh Delaney

Former Quantity Surveying student now degree apprentice in the same field through BCU, Niamh Delaney, shares how the Henderson Scholarship helped her with achieving her education and career aspirations.

When did you decide to apply for the scholarship?

I decided to apply for the scholarship during the transition from college to university, a time when I was carefully considering how to support myself financially while continuing to pursue my long-term career goals. Through my T Level in Construction, and particularly the industry placement it offered, I had already developed a strong interest in Quantity Surveying. The scholarship felt like more than just financial support—it represented an opportunity to invest in both my academic journey and my professional future as I began my studies at BCU.

What made you apply for it?

Initially, it was my mum who encouraged me to apply. As the first person in my family to go to university, the idea felt both exciting and daunting, and I struggled to believe that I could be awarded such an opportunity. However, the more I thought about it, the more I realised that the scholarship stood for something much bigger than financial support. It offered me the chance to represent and inspire others—particularly young women and individuals from underrepresented backgrounds in construction. Being both the first in my family to attend university and a woman entering a traditionally male-dominated industry gave me a strong sense of purpose. I wanted to show that this path is possible, and that ambition should never feel limited by background.

How has it changed your life during your first year at BCU?

The scholarship has had a genuinely transformative impact on my first year. Financially, it has eased the pressure of living costs, especially as I adjusted to life in student accommodation. More importantly, it has allowed me to focus fully on my studies without the constant worry of student debt. Beyond the financial support, it has given me a sense of confidence and belonging. Starting university can feel overwhelming but knowing that I had already been recognised and supported from the outset made a huge difference. It didn’t just support me, but it reassured my family too, easing the fear that often comes with taking that step into higher education. One of the most meaningful outcomes has been the motivation it has given me to inspire others. If my journey can encourage even one young person—especially a young woman—to consider a career in construction, then that is something I am incredibly proud of.

Has it helped with gaining experience for the line of industry you’re interested in?

Absolutely. The scholarship has been a reflection of the hard work and determination it took to get to this point, and it has played a key role in building my confidence. That confidence helped me take the next big step, securing a Degree Apprenticeship as a Quantity Surveyor. It wasn’t just the funding that made the difference, but the belief that came with it. It gave me the courage to put myself forward, to aim higher, and to trust in my own ability to succeed within the industry.

How has the scholarship helped through your first year of university?

The support I’ve received has been both financial and professional. At Christmas, the fund reduced the need for excessive part-time work, allowing me to prioritise both my studies and enjoy the festive holiday with family. Continuing to support me, as I approach my busy second year and easing financial pressures as I adjust to my apprenticeship also.

Although I will be moving away from the scholarship, now completing my first year to pursue my degree apprenticeship, I remain incredibly grateful for all of support I’ve received. Being part of the programme as a ‘Henderson Fellow’ is something I’m proud to continue. It has opened doors to networking opportunities and allowed me to engage with others who are equally passionate about their futures. Looking ahead, I hope to use my experience to give back—supporting and inspiring other students as they explore their own career paths. To me, the scholarship is not just something I received; it’s something I now carry forward. It represents opportunity, resilience, and the idea that with the right support, potential can truly become achievement.
