For BSc Computer Networks and Security student Farwa Adhami, financial support from the Henderson Scholarship has helped her focus on her studies and build towards a career in cybersecurity.
After receiving a £2,000 Henderson Access Bursary in her first year, Farwa achieved high grades and strong attendance. Her performance led to an interview for the full Henderson Scholarship, which now provides £10,000 a year towards her studies.
Created and funded by BCU graduate and Slack co-founder Cal Henderson, the scholarship supports UK students studying undergraduate degrees in Computing, Engineering and Technology-related subjects.
“The scheme was perfect for me, as it allowed me to work less, study more and still afford necessities,” said Farwa.
“I applied for it hoping it would provide some financial support during my time at university. From experience, it became very difficult for me to juggle a job, education and personal life.
“In college, I had a part-time retail job which constantly drained me physically and mentally. It became noticeable to my teachers when my grades started dropping.”
One of the main reasons Farwa applied for the scholarship was to reduce the financial burden of student loans.
“I was worried I wouldn’t be able to keep up with payments due to the lack of job opportunities in the economy and rising interest rates,” she said.

The scholarship has allowed Farwa to focus on networking with tutors and industry specialists as she prepares for her third-year project and a future career in cybersecurity.
“My immediate plans are to graduate and get a job in my industry, but I also want to keep working on personal projects and continue learning,” she said.
“I hope to work with smaller companies and startups to help improve their cybersecurity awareness and allow them to grow successfully.
“I want to give back to my community, supporting underprivileged students, young girls and anyone who finds themselves in my position.
“That’s why I plan to continue working as a STEM ambassador for the university, as BCU offers great initiatives that promote STEM subjects to young girls and women.”
