Accommodation myth busting

Wondering what it's really like to live in university accommodation? Well, it's not quite like what you may have seen in the movies… we’re here to bust the myths around living in university halls of residence so you know what you can really expect if you chose to live away from home during your studies.

‘I’ll have to share my room with someone else at university’

MYTH!

You may have seen university students sharing rooms in popular American TV shows and films but it doesn't quite work in the same way here in the UK. If you apply for accommodation, you’ll get your own room in a flat with other students. So don’t worry, you can sleep in as long as you want! You can also choose whether to share a bathroom or have your own ensuite – talk about luxury.

‘Accommodation is a great place to make friends’

TRUTH!

In your accommodation, you’ll be mixed with lots of different people from a range of courses and backgrounds, so it’s the best place to make friends with people you otherwise may not have met.

the most important thing to do on your first day is to build up the courage to leave your bedroom and get socialising!

‘I’ll live on beans on toast’

MYTH!

All of our kitchens are equipped to make a 3-course meal if you really wanted to! If that’s not your thing, then living in halls is a great chance to work on your cooking skills.

Living with other people is also a perfect opportunity to cook as a group – why not ask your housemate to teach you their favourite recipes or make something that’s great for sharing?

Of course, you can live on pot noodles and beans if you really want to…

‘It’s really complicated organising and paying the bills’

MYTH!

The price of all of the accommodation at BCU includes the price of all utilities and bills. This is a fixed price so you can turn on the TV, pop the heating on and get cosy without having to worry about all of that.

‘I’ll have a lot more independence if I move away to university’

TRUTH!

If you’re living on your own, you’ll have to do all the things your parents normally do for you – washing, ironing, cooking, cleaning – the lot! It will be your responsibility to work with your flatmates to make sure the flat is clean and tidy – no one wants mouldy plates left in the sink.

‘I have to be a big party person to enjoy living in halls’

MYTH!

Lots of different people live in student accommodation and not all of them will want to go out partying every night. If you do, then that’s fine, but you can also make friends who want to have movie nights, play sports or just chill.
