  • Dr Athfar Akhtar

    Senior Lecturer in Applied Psychology

    Prior to coming to BCU, Athfah Akhtar was a researcher working alongside clinicians in primary and secondary mental health services for 7 years. Her PhD was on an area within occupational psychology, specifically well-being in Trainee Teachers.

  • Dr Kyle Brown

    Associate Professor

    Dr Kyle Brown is an experimental psychologist with a primary focus on the role of health-related cognitions and biases in the appraisal of (pro and anti) health messages, produced by alcohol companies and the government respectively.

  • Dr Kathrina Connabeer

    Lecturer in Psychology, MSc Health Psychology Course Director

    Dr Kathrina Connabeer  teaches on a number of modules on the BSc Psychology and MSc Health psychology course at BCU. She thoroughly enjoys interacting with students through using real life case studies, practical examples and more generally chooses a hands-on approach to her teaching.

  • Dr Helen Egan

    Reader in Health Psychology

    Helen gained her PhD in Health Psychology becoming a Research Fellow in Mental Health in Primary Care and General Practice, and worked in the NHS before coming to BCU in 2011.

  • Dr John Galvin

    Senior Lecturer in Psychology

    Dr John Galvin is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology. Before arriving at BCU in September 2016 he studied and worked in Wales. He completed his undergraduate at Bangor University and his PhD at Cardiff University.

    Senior Lecturer in Health Psychology

    Dr Angela Hewett specialises in health psychology and has a keen interest in gender and health and in health inequalities. Angela has also worked in public health at both Birmingham City University and the University of Liverpool.

  • Misba Hussain

    Assistant Lecturer in Psychology

    Misba Hussain began her journey at Birmingham City University by studying a BSc (Hons) in Psychology. After graduating, she progressed onto working towards her PhD. Misba’s PhD is related to obesity, and she is currently conducting several experiments on promoting healthier eating behaviours.

    As Professor of Occupational Health Psychology, Craig Jackson is interested in the effect of workplaces and working on people’s health and psychological wellbeing. 

  • Dr Atiya Kamal

    Senior Lecturer in Health Psychology

    Atiya has taught health psychology for several years across a number of different modules at undergraduate and post-graduate level and had a leading role in developing the BPS accredited MSc Health Psychology programme at Birmingham City University.
