Ali Wardak

Reader in Criminology

Dr Ali Wardak was born in Afghanistan, and is graduate in law and jurisprudence from Kabul University, Afghanistan. He obtained his PhD degree from the Faculty of Law, University of Edinburgh (United Kingdom) in 1995. Dr Wardak is currently a Reader (Associate Professor) in criminology at the University of Glamorgan, United Kingdom, and Vice President of the South Asian Society of Criminology and Victimology (SASCV).

His main teaching and research interests focus on comparative criminology, rule of law and the relationships between state and non-state justice systems. From September 2006 to October 2008, he worked for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kabul, and co-authored the 2007 Afghanistan Human Development Report. Dr Wardak has published widely on criminological and Afghanistan related issues, and has presented numerous academic papers at major international conferences in Asia, Australia, Europe and in the USA.

In addition, Dr Wardak has vigorously contributed to various current affairs/news programmes of the BBC (Television) Wales, ITV, BBC Radio 4 (Sara Dickens's Programme), Radio Red Dragon, BBC Radio-One World, BBC Persian and Pashto programmes, Radio Liberty, Tolo and Lemar TVs (Afghanistan), and Vice of America Ashna TV (Dari and Pashto). Dr Wardak speaks, reads and writes in Pashto, Dari/Persian, Arabic and English proficiently.
