Alice Storey

Alice Story is a Law PhD student funded by Midlands3Cities. She is currently researching how the Universal Periodic Review is facilitating the Abolition of the Death Penalty in the U.S.

From research trips to the United Nations in Geneva to planning more research trips to the U.S, Alice describes her experience as non-stop and fantastic. In her own words:

"When I first applied for the PhD I thought it would be about sitting at home or the university all day and doing some research but it's so much more than that! Probably half your week is spent researching for your PhD and the other half of your week would be attending events.

Last week I went to the University of Nottingham to attend the Abolition of the Death Penalty event. So there's a lot of different things going on. And that's a good thing because you get to experience a lot of new things...it's definitely not boring being a PhD student!"

My top tips for applying for the Midlands3Cities funding would be:

1) Get working on your research proposal as soon as possible. Get in touch with a possible supervisor and ask for their expertise on your proposal from a supervisor's point of view.

2) Start writing as quickly as you can to make sure that your possible supervisor can have a look through your proposal before you submit it.

3) Be very careful of the strict character limit. Make sure you are within the limit. If you go over the character limit, they'll bin your application straight away. It can be difficult to say everything you want to say in such a short space which is why it's important to start early.

Alice is currently applying for a Cohort Development Fund with a group of other students to put on a generic human rights conference.  Once she decided that she wanted to do a PhD, she got in touch with the Director of Research for the Law school who told her all about Midlands3Cities and the application process.

"With Midlands3Cities not only do you get your fees paid and a stipend (which is essentially a monthly wage) but you can also apply for extra funding which you're actively encouraged to do. You can do this for yourself or for a group of students and that was an added bonus for me with Midlands3Cities."

Alice believes the secret to being a successful PhD student is to be as enthusiastic as you can. She is planning to put in an individual funding bid for herself to go over to the USA to do some research for her proposal.
