This seminar is hosted by the Centre for Human Rights and the School of Law Research Seminar Series. Our series offers exciting insights into ongoing research projects within the law school and conducted by our external research partners. We often feature work from our three research centres (the Centre for American Legal Studies, the Centre for Human Rights, and the Centre for Science, Law and Policy). Our work is often transdisciplinary, dealing with law's relationship with broadly defined social justice, policy-making, science and much more. Join us for invigorating discussion!

In this first special session of the academic year, we will have a research discussion with Dr Alice Story, Favour Betty Kalu, and Aise-Osa Igbinomwanhia.

Dr Storey is a Lecturer in Law and Associate Director of the Centre for Human Rights at BCU, where she also leads the UPR Project at BCU. Her research focuses on the UN’s Universal Periodic Review mechanism and international human rights, predominantly from the perspective of women's rights and the abolition of capital punishment. Most recently, after being invited as a panellist to Namibia's UPR Pre-session, Alice was invited to consult with the Namibian government on their HIV healthcare strategies.

Favour is an LLM International Human Rights student and a Student Representative for her course. She is interested in the rights of women and girls with HIV from the perspective of the international human rights to health and non-discrimination, and she believes it is time for these rights to be realised in practice.

Aise is a Nigerian lawyer and currently an LLM International Law student BCU, where he is a Student Representative for his course. Having previously worked with victims of sexual abuse in relation to HIV/AIDS at an NGO, he is committed to the empowerment of women and girls.

Alice, Favour and Aise will facilitate a discussion with the audience on the following topic:

World AIDS Day 2021 – A Research Discussion on Women and Girls with HIV
Abstract

In support of the 2021 World AIDS Day on 1st December, this research discussion will provide a stimulating and thought-provoking forum for a discussion of the rights of women and girls with HIV across the world. First, Alice will provide an overview of the rights of women and girls with HIV, including outlining the work being carried out by the UPR Project at BCU. Second, Favour will lead the discussion regarding the forced sterilisation of women and girls with HIV. Third, Aise will begin the dialogue around how to protect female sex workers from HIV. The speakers will use their expertise and experiences relating to these important issues to begin a conversation with the attendees. This is a research discussion forum rather than a presentation. So, we are welcoming all attendees to come ready to discuss these important issues with us in a friendly environment.

As this is a research discussion where all attendees are welcome and encouraged to participate, you are welcome to review the below documents ahead of this event as these will provide key insights into the discussion topic.

If you have any questions, contact Iyan Offor, the Research Seminar Series leader, at iyan.offor@bcu.ac.uk.
