Essa Shahra
Dr Essa Shahra (BSc, MSc, PhD, FHEA) is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at Birmingham City University and the Course Lead for MSc Advanced Computer Science. He has more than 12 years of experience across academia, research, and industry.
Dr Shahra received his bachelor’s degree from Taiz University in Yemen and his master’s degree from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Saudi Arabia. He subsequently completed his PhD at Birmingham City University, specialising in Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things.
His research focuses on artificial intelligence, machine learning, the Internet of Things, intelligent edge–cloud computing, wireless sensor networks, smart sensing, computer networks, cybersecurity, and data-driven systems. His doctoral research developed an intelligent edge–cloud framework for water-quality monitoring in IoT-enabled water distribution networks.
Dr Shahra has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles published in international journals and conference proceedings. He has also contributed to several funded research and knowledge-transfer projects in the UK and internationally, collaborating with academic and industrial partners in Saudi Arabia, Spain, Greece, and the UK. His current industry engagement includes academic leadership and supervision within Knowledge Transfer Partnership projects that apply artificial intelligence, generative AI, intelligent automation, and digital technologies to real-world business challenges.
Alongside his research and industry activities, Dr Shahra has extensive experience in teaching postgraduate computing modules and supervising undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral research. He is committed to connecting academic knowledge with practical applications, supporting student development, and fostering innovation through collaboration between universities and industry.
