Alex's area of research is British game histories, specifically of the 1980s where he has two zones of interest. First, Alex examine a how games of the past influence the society and economy of the present day, seen in gamification, pay-to-play/pay-to-win models as applied to education and healthcare and a post-consumer society based around play rather than production. Second, he excavates the histories of videogames in the 1980s to ensure that the living histories of this time are not lost to future generations. He does this through primary and archival research and challenging the received narratives of the time. Taken together, this approach has resulted in two books, : published in 2016 by Bloomsbury and published in 2018 by Zero.
