Midwifery

We are a team of qualified lecturers who have many years clinical experience, which we use to underpin the teaching on our programmes.

The variety of backgrounds and experience within the teaching team enables us to deliver a high standard of quality and innovative teaching, which encourages the development of students, providing them with the knowledge and opportunity to become a confident and competent health professional.

The department provides undergraduate programmes, and we have a wide range of short and modular courses to aid life-long learning.

  • BSc (Hons) Midwifery / Graduate Diploma in Midwifery 20 months
  • Examination of the Newborn
  • AEQUIP

Staff expertise

Our Head of Department, Julie Hadley and Lead Midwife for Education, Lisa Sutton are paramount for ensuring that the midwifery course meets the exacting standards of the NMC.

Lisa and Julie are supported by the course leaders:

  • Natasha Carr (0121 331 6085) – 3 year Midwifery course

Alongside the ability to teach the speciality appropriate to the respective programmes, members of the team are continuing to undergo personal development which includes master's, doctorate and PhD programmes.

Many team members have also published widely and speak regularly at conferences. Additionally, staff are also proactive in participating in local and national projects, which in turn enhances the relationship the department has with partner trusts and wider parties in the same field.

Learning and teaching

A wide variety of teaching methods are utilised within the programmes with the inclusion of the virtual case creator and purpose made teaching tools/ videos. Within Midwifery a group of lecturers have also seized the opportunity to integrate social media to support leaning with the development of iBooks.
