Dr Mahendra Patel, Honoary Visitng Professor in Advancing Diabetes Care is also a Honorary Visiting Professor at the Universityof Bradford and Visiting Professor at the University of Sussex and Universiti Sains Malaysia, is a senior academic and pharmacist of national and international profile.

Dr Patel has been a dynamic member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) English Pharmacy board and until recently as Treasurer for England Scotland and Wales. His national and pioneering work with the highly renowned and reputed National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), culminated in him being of the first to become a Fellow of NICE 2010-2013.

Dr Patel’s longstanding contribution to the pharmacy profession and beyond has been appreciated widely and led to him being a recipient of a number of outstanding national awards, including for example the prestigious RPS President’s Charter Award and the BMJ Team Diabetes Award with the South Asian Health Foundation.

Dr Patel has also joined the University of Oxford and its Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences in a national role as BAME community and pharmacy lead, working on the UK government’s urgent and public health Principle Trial in the quest to find a treatment for the early symptoms of COVID-19 in the community. This has put pharmacy on the platform by bringing together the pharmacy profession UK-wide in promoting the trial as a first ever.

Internationally, his far reaching work in India engaging with a number of pharmacy colleges and universities, faculty staff and students, the pharmacy profession of India recognised in him becoming of the first to be awarded an International Fellowship of the Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA) 2020.

Working extensively with the Lebanese Pharmacy profession and supporting pharmacy practice and education in Lebanon, resulted in him being appointed OPL International Lebanese Honorary Ambassador.  For many years he has continued to work with the pharmacy department at Wilkes University Pennsylvania USA, leading on their Pharmacy Student International Exchange Programme with UK.

Dr Patel’s skills as an inspiring educator and teacher to many has now propelled him to being a member of the Teaching and Faculty at the Department of Education’s International Chair of Bioethics Programme UNESCO 2020.

The far-reaching work of Dr Patel globally has culminated in him being recognised by the University of Bradford, as the University’s first Global Ambassador to be appointed. The Commonwealth Pharmacy Association has also honoured Dr Patel and his contributions by inviting him to represent the Commonwealth Pharmacy Association as one its distinguished patrons.
