Anne Phillips is a Queen's Nurse and a National Teaching Fellow with the Higher Education Academy. After a career in specialist and community diabetes nursing in London and Yorkshire, Anne previously worked with colleagues at the University of York and established a countrywide and international collaborative curriculum for Health Professionals in Diabetes Care. She also worked with Diabetes UK with clinical colleagues to provide an annual diabetes conference for primary care in the Northern & Yorkshire area.

Anne was awarded the Quality in Care ‘Outstanding Diabetes Educator’ Award in 2014.

Anne’s doctorate studies concerned invigorating diabetes health professional education to meet service and client centred needs.

Anne has published 102 peer reviewed articles and edited ‘Principles of Diabetes Care" which was published in 2017 in its 2nd edition. She has been an editorial member for the European Medical Journal Diabetes Series and UK Practice Nursing Journals to enable outreach of diabetes education to practice colleagues.

Anne has a Honorary Contract as a Diabetes Research Nurse with the Diabetes Team at Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital, Birmingham.

Anne is a CI on a Diabetes UK and NIHR research programme with colleagues nationally as part of the DIAMONDS CLAHRC Collaborative with Dr Najma Sidiqi. This research seeks to establish a successful diabetes structured education approach for people living with severe mental illness and type 2 diabetes.

Anne supervises NHS Colleagues undergoing the West Midlands NIHR Internship Programme.

2022 – ongoing – Impact of a community screening and follow-up protocol in identifying and managing diabetes in patients diagnosed with mental illness – Intervention study with CMC Vellore, India, Co-investigator with Dr Manoranjitham. S as the Principal Investigator

2020 – ongoing – Pilot project with Wolverhampton NHS Trust, Co-investigator with Professor Anne-Marie Carnaby as the Principal Investigator – Insights into culturally competent delivery of diabetes care.

2018 – IDEAL – ongoing – Insight Diabetes Excellence Access Learning White Paper creation and work across all PCNs in England to improve diabetes care.

2017 – PhD thesis - Invigorating Diabetes Health Professional Education to meet Service and Person-Centred Needs: An Auto-ethnography.

2017 – 2021 - Co-Investigator on Diabetes UK Research Grant 2016 for £93,300 - The psychosocial impact of diabetes and diabetes care provision for people with severe mental illness (SMI): a multi-centre international patient, carer and healthcare staff survey. This research actively sought to design a suitable patient education programme for people living with SMI and type 2 diabetes.

2016 – 2017 - Collaborative partnership THET grant with Co-Principal Investigator status with Dr Nihal Thomas, CMC Vellore to evaluate effect of health professional diabetes education programmes on progressing practice across India.

2014 – onwards - Team member of DIAMONDS (Diabetes and Mental Illness - Improving Outcomes and Services). DIAMONDS was established in 2014 to carry out research about the co-morbid relationship between severe mental illness and diabetes with an aim to improve outcomes and services for this patient group. Set up under the CLAHRC Yorkshire and Humber Mental Health and Co-morbidities theme, DIAMONDS is a partnership between Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust, Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, and the Universities of York and Leeds.
