Executive Dean of the Faculty of Education, Law and Social Sciences, Professor Fiona Church, has exercised her right as a new Freeman of the City of London to herd sheep over London Bridge.
In recognition of her committed work in the Education sector, Fiona was appointed a Freeman of the Company of Educators last year, which also entitled her to Freedom of the City of London - one of the oldest surviving traditions in existence. Today the Freedom is largely symbolic, but in the Middle Ages, the Freedom meant the right to trade and drive livestock in the City.
Fiona described her unusual Sunday afternoon: “To my left was a bearded man dressed as Little Bo Peep, to my right, someone dressed as a sheep, and several people in tweeds and wellies who were members of the Worshipful Company of Woolmen. The event raised lots of money for the Lord Mayor of London's charities.”
