Birmingham City University Criminologist, Dr Imran Awan was invited to meet the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street on Monday.
As part of his duties as an independent Government advisor on anti-Muslim hatred, Dr Awan continues to provide his expertise and knowledge for politicians and provide tangible answers on how best society can tackle hate crimes.
The event also included some of the country’s leading British Muslims as part of a celebration of Eid where Prime Minister Theresa May talked about the huge contribution British Muslims have made.
Dr Awan stated that: “This was an incredible honour and opportunity for me to represent Birmingham City University at the highest government level. As an expert researching hate crimes, I am in a position where I am using my research and evidence for politicians in helping them better understand the causes of anti-Muslim hatred and what we can do to tackle it. Something, sadly as a society we have seen on an increase.”
Dr Awan’s latest book ‘Islamophobia: Lived Experiences of Online and Offline Victimisation’ is published by Policy Press.
