Birmingham City University’s Faculty of Health has won an award for its teaching - after being nominated by its students.

The Department of Skills & Simulation, School of Professional Practice in the Faculty of Health has won the Higher Education Academy’s (HEA) 2011 Learning and Teaching Team Award for Health Sciences & Practice disciplines in Higher Education. This year’s award was given for excellence in demonstrating collaboration in enhancing the students learning experience.

Students within the Faculty of Health were so impressed with the collaborative approach to a range of teaching and learning activities, that they decided to nominate the Faculty. Examples include the investigation of the retention of basic life support skills, introducing summative OSCE (Observed Structure Clinical Examination) assessments, working alongside students to develop multi modal simulation activities and for the unique and innovative venture known as S.P.A.C.E (Skills Practice and Clinical Enhancement); an open access room where students can build confidence and competence in clinical skills which was displayed to the public at the recent Open Day on Saturday 18 June.

The HEA works with UK universities and colleges to develop and enhance the methods by which academics teach students and has been running the award for four years. This year the HEA aimed to reward collaborative approaches to teaching, as applications were requested from teams of two or more working together, either academically, in practice or both.

Staff from the Faculty of Health will be presented with the award at the eLearning in Health Conference dinner on Monday 27 June at Aston Business School Conference Centre.
