Student nurses up for national award

Three nursing students from Birmingham City University have been shortlisted for a prestigious scholarship award.

Third year students Camilla-Corinne Harvey, Charlotte Downes and Victoria Lynne are up for the Cavell Nurses’ Trust Scholarship Award.

The awards which were launched in the UK for the first time last year, aim to recognise exceptional student nurses and midwives. Both Charlotte and Victoria have been shortlisted for the Outstanding Nurse category, whilst Camilla is in line to win the Edith Cavell Leadership Award.

Child nursing student Victoria has been involved with a number of projects during her time at university and is currently student Chair and Integral Lead for the University’s SPACE initiative (Skills Practice and Clinical Enhancement) – a unique student-led open access learning environment, designed to support students in developing their clinical skills in a safe and supportive environment outside of lecture time.

In addition Victoria is actively involved in supporting fellow nursing students which she believes is an integral part of her role as a student nurse. She said: “There is an expectation as students that we should take responsibility for our own learning and I feel that I as a student, have a duty to support my current and future peer’s learning and have a responsibility to be a positive role model to other nursing students.

“It was a complete surprise to have been shortlisted for the outstanding student nurse award. Although apprehensive about the next stage, I am very excited. My passion for nursing and patient care remains at the forefront of my ambition to succeed.”

The winners of this year’s award will be announced at an awards ceremony at the Fishmongers’ Hall in London in March.
