A child health care expert from Birmingham City University is aiming to change fathers’ experiences of child birth and early new-born care, with the launch of a new book.

‘Fatherhood in Midwifery and Neonatal Practice’ explores modern fatherhood in midwifery and neonatal practice, providing practitioners with the support and guidance needed in order to promote the involvement of fathers during childbirth and early parenthood.

Merryl Harvey, Senior Academic in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Birmingham City University’s Faculty of Health, compiled and edited the book alongside Dr Kevin Hugill, Senior Lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire.

Focusing directly on assisting midwives and neonatal nurses to consider the effects of their practice on men’s fatherhood experiences, the book explores the changing roles and responsibilities of parents and the societal expectations and pressures faced on a daily basis.

Merryl Harvey said: “Whilst specifically intended for midwives and neonatal nurses, it is anticipated that this book will inform all health care professionals and practitioners in training who are involved in all aspects of child care. This is a timely publication which is responding to the current drive in the UK to engage and involve fathers more extensively in the lives of their children.”

“Fatherhood in Midwifery and Neonatal Practice”, is published by Quay books and is available to purchase online at Quay Books and other good book stores.
