Vice-Chancellor’s message to staff and students

Professor Philip Plowden, Birmingham City University Vice-Chancellor, has shared a message of support with the University’s staff and student community regarding unfolding events in Iran.

Professor Plowden said:

It is deeply troubling to see the unfolding events in Iran sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini while in police custody after her arrest for an alleged breach of the country’s dress rules for women.

Global events of this magnitude inevitably impact our staff and student community in any number of ways, and we are doing all we can to provide appropriate support for our students and staff at this challenging time. Working across Student Wellbeing, our Students’ Union and Faculty teams, we have identified our Iranian students and staff, and those who have close links to Iran, signposting them to additional help and advice.

We will keep a very close eye on events and encourage students and colleagues with specific concerns to speak to their personal tutors or line managers, to ensure we can support as needed.
