Vice-Chancellor at Birmingham City University, Professor Cliff Allan, is to travel to Malaysia in October to explain why engaging students in every aspect of the university experience is the future of learning and teaching.

Professor Allan will set out the University's ‘Partners for Success’ approach during his keynote address at the Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) International Conference 2013 on Innovation and Transformation in Learning and Teaching.

He said: "As one of TARC’s key partners in the UK we share a strong interest in the conference themes of innovative approaches to learning, teaching and assessment, the digital learning ecosystem, and the effects of globalisation on institutional and professional development.

"We must be more active in recognizing students as partners in the educational process. In an increasingly marketised HE environment it would be easy to see students acting as consumers, or even as customers. This should be avoided. Moreover, students don’t see themselves as such. Students are partners."

The conference takes place 21-22 October 2013 at Tunku Abdul Rahman College, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and will comprise of keynote addresses, peer-reviewed papers, plenary sessions, posters and workshops over the two days.
