Not all school leavers initially fancy going on to university, but studying something that you enjoy can have surprising and rewarding results.

BSc (Hons) Business Information Technology student, Jenny Powell, explains: "I didn't expect to come to university and now I'm planning my postgraduate studies!"

Jenny had planned to leave school and find a job, but after gaining better results than she expected she contacted Birmingham City University and secured a place through UCAS Clearing.

"I love learning and studying. It's important to plan your time carefully and remember to have fun as well as working hard!

The benefits of an IT-based career

Roles – including programmers, web developers, helpdesk support and IT consultants – can have an average starting salary of around £23,000; experienced IT professionals earn an average of £38,000, with significantly higher wages in some specialist fields.
