Millions of rail users across the West Midlands will be given the opportunity to experience the work of talented art and design students from Birmingham City University.

A series of eye-catching posters designed by Birmingham Institute of Art & Design (BIAD) students, part of Birmingham City University, have been unveiled today (June 14) at stations run by train operator London Midland across the region.

The collaborative project between the rail operator and the Birmingham City University is entitled Made in the Midlands and celebrates the contribution the region makes to the creative industries. The students’ stunning artwork ranges from photography, graphics and textiles to paintings and illustrations.

The public poster launch coincides with a nationwide campaign entitled Universities Week, June 14 to 20, which will see over 100 universities highlighting the essential role that universities play in sustaining our society, culture and economy.

“This showcase of creative talent is very exciting, not only for our students, but for the travelling public too,” said Paul Glennon, Associate Dean, at Birmingham City University’s BIAD.

“We are delighted that London Midland supports this project and shares our pride in the diverse creativity that comes from this region. This creative talent ultimately supports the region’s cultural and economic development.

“Birmingham City University is the leading provider of undergraduate talent for the creative industries outside of London. This directly supports the local and national economy and directly contributes to a sector that is fast-growing.”

Alex Hynes, London Midland commercial director, said: “I’m sure rail users throughout the region will enjoy and appreciate the creativity and diversity of this collection.

“The Made in the Midlands project was devised to find new ways of bringing art to rail stations and to encourage local students to showcase their work to a wide audience.

“This type of project is ideal for passengers who rarely visit galleries or exhibitions, as it gives people the chance to view an eclectic range of art in non traditional areas such as platforms and booking halls. We are proud to display these posters across our network throughout the West Midlands.”
