Part-time study could be the solution

University News Last updated 20 August 2010

Have you considered studying part-time? That’s the message from experts at Birmingham City University following a record number of calls yesterday (Thursday 19 August) to its Clearing hotline (0121 331 6777).

The University received almost 4,000 calls from people who had not secured a place at university – that compares to 2,590 received the previous year. When the phone lines opened at 8am on Thursday the University had between 200-300 places unfilled – by the time line closed at 8pm that figure went down to around 50. Places available are limited to a few subject areas such as Computing, Engineering, Surveying, Property and Construction. Now, experts at the University are suggesting that prospective students who haven’t managed to find a place on a full-time course consider spreading out their studies and apply for a part-time course instead.

Kathryn Jones, Director of Marketing and Communications, said: “If you still haven’t been able to get a place at university, don’t panic! There are other routes open to you including part-time study, which is outside the government’s cap on full-time undergraduate courses.

“Here at Birmingham City University we offer a full range of part-time courses in subjects such as Art and Design, Accounting, Law, Engineering, Property and Construction and Computing. In fact one third of the total number of students at Birmingham City University study on a part-time basis.

“If you haven’t considered it before, you may want to think again. Part-time study may actually prove a more economical way to study as you can fit your study around work gaining valuable experience while you learn and earning an income to fund your studies”
