Birmingham City University will on Wednesday, May 23 be lending its full support to the national launch of a campaign and survey results to promote mature learners.
Luke Millard, from the University’s own learning lab, the Centre for Enhancement of Learning and Teaching, and Student Communications Officer Tom Thompson will be formally attending the prestigious Parliamentary event.
Among the inspiring case studies of how starting higher education later in life can be transformational will be the story of 33-year-old Steve Thornton, who studied at Birmingham City University as a mature student.
Believing it’s never too late to follow your passion Steve studied media and communications before setting up his own business with fellow graduate Chris Williams. The pair now run a digital marketing agency called 470 Media.
The Parliamentary event will also reveal research conducted by the university think-tank million+ and the National Union of Students (NUS). The joint-study was to investigate the realities of life as a mature student and has led to the publication of a best practice guide.
The million+ and NUS project aims to promote the importance of lifelong learning - highlighting the role of modern universities like Birmingham City University, in creating opportunities for older learners.
More than a quarter of all first time undergraduates are now mature students.
- Earlier this month a Birmingham City University team showcased its own pioneering research in the House of Commons when, as part of the Olympic-themed Universities Week 2012, it revealed a ‘vibrating suit’ which helps athletes improve their posture and performance.
