After wowing visitors at the Milan Design Fair and New Generation Arts, a Birmingham City University student's unique light design is now moving on across Europe to be exhibited at the Prague Design Week and then the Paris Batimat show this autumn.
The ‘TriMacs' light was designed by Anais Groisy as part of her BA Product Design degree course at the University and was the UK winning entrant in the LG HiMacs 2009 contest. It incorporates the latest super energy-efficient ‘FlatLite' technology cleverly encapsulated between two layers of LG HiMacs stone and acrylic material so that it glows through the outer surface. The HiMacs has been moulded so that it wraps around two touch dimmable halogen lights supported by three aluminium legs.
When asked what inspired her Anais said: "I wanted to create the element of ‘surprise' about the material, and give the impression of flying and lightness to what is really a heavy stone-based product. The mixture of translucent and opaque HiMacs envelops the halogen lights like a cocoon, but when these are dimmed the FlatLite patterns still glows though the surface like ‘magic'."
"It is the second year we have collaborated with LG and it has been a fantastic experience for the product design students with the hi-profile South Korean company", says Anais's tutor Malcolm Hastings. "To have the opportunity for their designs to be manufactured and exhibited across Europe is a great motivator for them to work to a high professional level."
The ‘TriMacs' light will be on show at the Prague Design Week from 21 September to 4 October and Paris Batimat from 2 to 7 November.
