Keep calm and carry on to Clearing 2013

Anxious students who are looking to start a University course this September are being urged not to panic and to ‘keep calm and carry on to Clearing’ by Birmingham City University.

For the first time, advisors from the University will be going into local schools and colleges on A Level results day (Thursday 15 August 2013), to offer students an on-the-spot University place.

Students in these schools who have not met their grade requirements once they receive their results will still be able to seek advice from expert advisers and will also have the opportunity to speak to a member of staff from Birmingham City University, thanks to a dedicated phone line which will link college students to university academics.

And back at the University a team of specially trained staff will be on hand from 7am on Thursday 15 August to guide other students through their options once they receive their A Level results.

Before calling Birmingham City University’s Clearing hotline on 0121 331 6777 prospective students are advised to visit the UCAS website and University website to find out what is available in Clearing, and to ensure that they have enough points to get onto the course of their choice.

Lyn Holder, Head of Outreach and Enquiry Management at the University, said: “Clearing is often an anxious time for students. Some may have achieved better results than they expected and others may not have achieved their predicted grades. Others might have missed the UCAS cycle for applying to University and are now looking for a University place for this autumn.

"Whatever the reason, our advice is don’t panic. Take time to research the right course and right university for you. Check web sites and don’t be afraid to ask for guidance.

“At Birmingham City University our aim is to make sure that you are aware of all your options, so that you can choose the course that is right for you. At the same time we place a high value on employability.

“Furthermore, I urge you to discuss your options with your family, tutor or careers adviser. Choosing what course to study is a pretty big decision, so it might help to talk it through with someone else.”

The University is also offering a comprehensive portfolio of part-time courses through Clearing, including a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, professional and short courses, encompassing an equally diverse portfolio of subjects. Flexible study options help tailor courses to the specific needs of part-time students and often include evening and day release.

The Birmingham City University Clearing Hotline will be staffed from 7am to 8pm on Thursday 15 August, and from 8am to 8pm on Friday 16 August with reduced opening hours at the weekend. The University will also be holding a dedicated Clearing Open Day on Saturday 17 August from 10am-2pm for which there is no need to register.

Take a look at our clearing resources to help steer you through the weeks ahead as you make one of the most important choices of your life.
