How can postgraduate study increase my career prospects?

University News Last updated 15 April 2014

Birmingham City University is hosting a dedicated live Facebook chat next week to offer advice to prospective students interested in embarking on a postgraduate course.

The Postgraduate Facebook Chat is taking place on Wednesday 23 April from 12pm to 1pm and will give prospective students an ideal chance to find out more about the postgraduate study opportunities at Birmingham City University.

According to the What Do Graduates Do? study, by the Higher Education Careers Services Unit (HECSU), those with a postgraduate degree are more likely to secure a job compared to those with an undergraduate qualification. Over 93 per cent of postgraduate students from Birmingham City University go on find work or further study within six months, according to the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey 2011/12.

This Facebook chat event will provide a platform for those would-be students to 'talk' directly with our advisors and ask questions about the programmes, as well as the application process, without leaving the comfort of the sofa. It is also an ideal opportunity for questions to be answered for those who are unable to attend the Postgraduate Open Evening on Wednesday 30 April 2014.

Shona McQuillan, Course Enquiry Manager at Birmingham City University, said: "We recognise that prospective postgraduate students often need more flexible access to advice about pursuing further study and our Facebook live chats provide a really convenient way for them to find out more about the range of study opportunities we can offer them."

All those interested in taking part will need to have a Facebook account and will need to download the bcyou!chat app, some point before the live discussion takes place. Visitors to the site will be able to type in questions to communicate with staff in real-time. Prospective students who are unable to take part in the live chat will have the ability to post questions beforehand and look back over previous answers.

Members of the University's careers and guidance centre, research department and international office will be participating so they will be able to answer queries about issues such as student finance, benefits and accommodation as well as giving further information on course options.

The University has close links with industry and offers over 100 flexible postgraduate and professional courses on a wide range of subjects including Arts and Humanities, Law, Engineering, Media, Education, Social Sciences, Acting, Built Environment, Architecture, Music, Technology and Health.

Postgraduate study can enhance career prospects by offering the chance to learn key skills such as structuring workloads, developing powers of analysis, critical enquiry and working independently – abilities that are highly sought-after within the world of work and will prove invaluable within all career paths. Graduate destinations include big-name companies and organisations such as Jaguar Land Rover, Ernst & Young, Network Rail, General Electric, DHL and the BBC.
