Following news of A&E units across England failing to meet waiting time targets for 52 weeks in a row, Kevin Crimmons, Head of Adult Nursing at Birmingham City University, is emphasising the need for more resources in the community to combat the rising A&E admissions.

“There has to be more resources and expertise for patients to access in the community to prevent acute deterioration, at which time patients then present in A&E”, said Kevin.

“With a 40% erosion in community nurses over the last ten years, the expertise is stretched too thinly, with rising A&E admissions, and therefore the potential to miss targets is an inevitable consequence.”
