Talented Birmingham City University students are celebrating after the announcement of the George Jackson art and design awards.
The George Jackson event, hosted in the award-winning School of Jewellery in Vittoria Street, comprised students from across the University’s Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD) at Birmingham City University who had been selected by their Course Directors to exhibit their work for the judges of the George Jackson Trust.
George Jackson was a successful Birmingham Woollen Draper who established under his will in January 1696, a trust to enable undergraduate students within BIAD to compete for travel awards. This year’s winners included:
- Jessica Edwards - BA (Hons) Textile Design, Embroidered Textiles 1st Prize
- Lauren Tidd - BA Jewellery & Silversmithing 2nd Prize
- Charlie Kentish - BA (Hons) Architecture 3rd Prize
First prize winner, Jessica Edwards, will be using her cash prize to fund a trip to Sweden later this year where she will spend time in Stockholm visiting exhibitions and workshops showing contemporary textile art with routes in traditional textile techniques. Jessica will then travel further north through Sweden to Dalarnas where she will view traditional craft techniques and folk art. Jessica commented: ”This award has made my trip possible, and has given me the opportunity to learn about different textile techniques which will hopefully inspire my work when I return to the UK.”
