A budding female engineer from Birmingham is hoping to make sparks fly next week as she competes in the World Kickboxing and Karate Association Championships.

Samman Nasseri, an Electronic Engineering student at Birmingham City University, will join over 5,000 other competitors from 93 countries on Thursday 31 October as the four-day competition commences in Tuscany on the west coast of Italy.

Eighteen-year-old Samman, from Kingstanding in Birmingham, will be representing the England karate team in a squad of 13 members. Earlier this year Samman secured a bronze and two silver medals when competing in the national and European championships.

"I'm really looking forward to the Championships," said Samman. "It's a once in a lifetime opportunity and it's an honour to be representing England.

"I must admit I am nervous, especially as the competition gets closer. I hope I'm able to perform my best and do England proud whilst flying the Birmingham City University flag."
