National Student Finance Day hailed a success

Student Finance Day, held on 14 November 2011, was a national day dedicated to explaining the 2012 changes to student finance in England.

It was organised by the Independent Taskforce on Student Finance Information to ensure people understand how the new student finance package works before they make a decision as to whether they can afford to go to university.

Events at Birmingham City University

In conjunction with Aston University and the University of Birmingham, we used the day to dispel the myths surrounding fees and the cost of studying at university.

We held a special question time session at our City North Campus. Representatives from the three universities were joined by Wes Streeting, Deputy of Independent Taskforce on Student Finance and Aaron Porter, Former NUS President and Education Consultant, to answer queries from an audience of potential students, parents and teachers.

Here are just a few key facts each of the guest speakers highlighted during the debate:

Wes Streeting

  • Don't let the headlines put you off. You can afford it.
  • Payment depends on how much you earn, so you could pay less per month than under the current system.
  • This isn't like a traditional loan.

Aaron Porter

  • There is a big change about to happen.
  • I hope people will not be deterred by the rise in fees.
  • Youth unemployment is much lower for people with degrees.

You can read what our Director of Marketing and Communications, Kathryn Jones, thought of the event in her blog, Don’t let fees put you off.

We also held an online chat, asking “Can I afford university?” where our advisers answered questions on issues including finance, childcare and employment. Read the transcript from this event.
