The Executive Creative Director of direct marketing agency Wunderman, David Harris, praised the world leading work of Birmingham City University in a keynote speech at a graduate showcase held at the University last week.

The creative industry guru recognised the work that Birmingham City University contributes to the much-needed growth of the creative industries in the region. He said:

"This university and others like it who are dedicated to teach and nurture fresh, new creative talent struggle against all sorts of obstacles yet despite this, achieve amazing results.

"Birmingham City University is a very forward thinking institution in the way modules like collaborative practice in Visual Communication encourage a cross fertilization of ideas.

"The University's Faculty of Technology, Innovation and Development also helps networking and the sharing of innovative ideas and creative practice.

"The Faculty of Performance, Media and English is also doing some outstanding work. A good example is the Faculty's media experts who are national, if not international, leaders in applying journalism with the brave new world of social media."

Harris' speech formed part of the Creative Communities graduate showcase which featured work from the University's freshest talent, highlighting a range of original and stimulating new work crossing through the disciplines of traditional art and design, animation, photography and visual communication.

Joanna Birch, Head of Corporate Relations at Birmingham City University, commented on Harris' address.  She said: "As a significant international figure in creative design, David's association with the University is of huge value.

"He rightly identifies that encouraging creative individuals who don't always fit into standardised business practice can be key in unleashing fresh ideas and with a range of design awards for this year's graduates, our Visual Communication Department continues to reinforce its ability to work and build upon new talent coming through the system.

"Partnerships with key industry figures are central to this and play a significant role in keeping our courses industry focused and our teaching vibrant and uplifting."
