City students on the road to success

Talented Birmingham City University students are celebrating after the announcement of the Ryland and Jackson art and design awards.

The George Jackson event, hosted in the award-winning School of Jewellery in Vittoria Street, comprised students from across the University's Birmingham Institute of Art and Design who had been selected by their Course Directors to exhibit their work for the judges of the George Jackson Trust. The Louisa Anne Ryland Awards took place at BIAD's Gosta Green site and this year for the first time, a descendant of Louisa Anne Ryland, Robin Smith-Ryland was an External Adjudicator on the judging panel.

The Louisa Anne Ryland Award was established in 1876.  Louisa was the chief contributor to the Birmingham Government School of Ornamental Art, on the corner of Edmund Street and Margaret Street, now home to the Department of Art. She endowed a fund for student scholarships which is still being awarded annually. This year's winners included:

Nathan Monk BA Graphic Design - £1000

Jonnet Middleton MA Art Practice & Education £1000

Michele Carruthers BA Fine Art -£500

Anais Groisy BA Product Design - £500

Katharina Moch MA Jewellery - £500

Maria Lopez Zerpa BA Textile Design - £500

George Jackson was a successful Birmingham Woollen Draper who established under his will in January 1696, a trust to enable undergraduate students within BIAD to compete for travel awards. This year's winners included:

Tamara Oughtred Foundation Dip Art & Design 1st Prize

Grace Pinner BA Jewellery & Silversmithing 2nd Prize

Ian Cooper BA Theatre Performance & Event Design 3 Prize

Natasha Bagnall HND Jewellery & Silversmithing 4 Prize

First prize winner of the George Jackson award, Tamara Oughtred, will be using her award on a 3 week trip to Chile where she has secured a work placement shadowing a fashion photographer from leading Chilean fashion magazine, Blank. Tamara commented: "I'm delighted to win the award and it'll be a truly fantastic opportunity to gain such practical work experience. Fashion photography is the area in which I wish to work eventually so it'll be invaluable experience."
