Daniel Watson, a student at Birmingham City University, has won a three-month paid summer placement at Atkins Birmingham office in the landscape architecture team.

Daniel who is currently studying Landscape Architecture at the University won the prize for a submission focused on the potential uses of land within a flood plain in Shrewsbury, demonstrating technical excellence and design innovation.

The initiative was launched as an Atkins prize to find the best BA Landscape Architecture student, which was announced at the graduate design show with the top prize a paid summer placement to join the Atkins landscape architecture team in Birmingham.

Daniel said: “I’ve enjoyed every minute of my summer placement. It has given me a unique glimpse into working on ‘real life’ projects, learning from a team of experts every day. Winning the placement with my own project was also a real boost in confidence and now I feel ready to start moving forward with my career as a landscape architect and would recommend students apply to the competition next year.”

Graham Woodward, Atkins’ associate director for landscape architecture and urban design, said: “Working with the University gives us the opportunity to keep in touch with the latest ideas coming out of academia and most importantly the freshness of thinking from students like Daniel.”

Atkins has over the past few years been developing a closer relationship with Birmingham City University, providing part-time lecturing to undergraduate landscape architecture students. The competition will open again for students at Birmingham City University early 2015.
